The outlook for the RMB is highly controversial. Presently, the prevalent view isto expect a trend depreciation (Bloomberg consensus for USD/CNY: 6.85forend-2017and 6.98for end-2018). By contrast, we believe it’s more likely for theRMB to see a trend appreciation from a long-term perspective. In this note, wediscuss a framework on how to think about the issue.
